It’s day 3 of Blogmas y’all! I’ve teamed up with 11 fabulous bloggers and each day for 12 days we’ll be sharing exciting giveaways and fun blog posts! Today’s prompt is probably one of my favorites, I absolutely love giving back to my community and especially to the causes near and dear to my heart. Without further ado, here are my favorite organizations to support.
**Trigger Warning: There is an organization that supports survivors of sexual violence and there is also an organization that seeks to support the rights of every child. Both are located at the bottom of the page right after Crisis Text Line. If you are in crisis, please text START to 741-741, we’re here for you.
1.) National MS Society
Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a chronic disease that causes the immune system to eat away at the protective layering (the myelin sheath). It can cause vision loss, pain, fatigue, difficulty with coordination and several other symptoms. When I was 12, my mother was diagnosed with MS and it completely shattered our world; I just couldn’t comprehend why my mom (who was in her early 40’s at the time) was diagnosed with a chronic disease.
I’ve seen how drastically it’s changed her, but I am also so incredibly amazed by her strength and positive attitude. I try to raise awareness not only for the National MS Society but Multiple Sclerosis in general.
In the past, my father and grandparents have biked 150 miles at a National MS event in addition to raising $25,000 for Multiple Sclerosis Um, GOALSSS! I’ve personally wanted to connect with loved ones of those with MS and create a community support group. When it comes to MS, it’s an absolute guarantee that I will do as much as I can to advocate and give back. So how can you get involved and support the National MS Society? Check out their website for more information!
2.) Crisis Text Line
Crisis Text Line is a free, 24/7 text line for those in crisis. I’ve mentioned in the past that I volunteer as a Crisis Counselor there (yay!). It’s been a wonderful experience, and I promote Crisis Text Line whenever I can because I am SO proud of the work that we do. I’ll let this video speak for itself! For more information, you can check out their website here: http://www.crisistextline.org/
P.S: To get in touch with a trained and compassionate counselor, text START to 741-741. ** TRIGGER WARNING: the trigger that was mentioned earlier (sexual violence) is coming up soon in the post. I've spaced the post so that if this is trigger for you, you won't see any of the content. xo
3.) RAINN (Rape, Abuse, Incest National Network)
Like all of the previously mentioned organizations, RAINN holds an extremely special place in my heart. Since 1994, they have helped 2.4 million people, yep. That’s right. 2.3 MILLION. My goal as a future psychotherapist is to provide support for those who have experienced sexual and physical abuse, and those who have Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. We need organizations like RAINN, survivors voices NEED to be heard and RAINN is a large part of that voice and support. I’m aware that sexual violence isn’t something that should probably be discussed on a lifestyle blog, but it needs to be discussed. We need to bring awareness and support to these survivors and we need to remove the stigma that is too often attached to sexual violence. Find out how you can get involved here: https://www.rainn.org/
4.) World Childhood Foundation
The World Childhood Foundation works to prevent the exploitation and abuse of children. They support 100 international projects and assist both survivors of sexual violence and children & families that are at risk. Every child deserves to feel safe, and Childhood is working to make sure that it happens. http://www.childhood.org/
I know that this post was on the heavier and darker side of things than usual, but I’m okay with that. I do tend to get incredibly passionate and fired up about the causes that I care about and that was certainly the case in this post!
